Johannesburg, fondly known as ‘Joburg’ or ‘Jozi’, is the largest city, based on population, and the wealthiest city in South Africa, and is currently the world’s biggest inland city.

The town was built on the gold mining reef of the Witwatersrand, and has since grown into a residential powerhouse with a rich gold mining heritage. 40% of the world’s gold comes from Johannesburg, which has given rise to the city being nicknamed “Egoli” meaning “Place of Gold”.

While Johannesburg is the smallest town in Gauteng in terms of area, it is the provincial capital of Gauteng and South Africa’s financial capital, making Gauteng the wealthiest province of South Africa.

Johannesburg is recognised as an economic powerhouse of Africa and as a result, the fast-growing suburbs are now reaching the inner-city skyscrapers and busy highways. There are about 3.8 million people between the ages of 19 and 39 living in Joburg, most of whom are young professionals, or first-time home Buyers seeking successful careers offered in the city. The city offers an abundance of business opportunities and as such, many South Africans relocate here from all parts of South Africa.

Apart from the city centre, Johannesburg features a number of established suburbs, convenient shopping centres and other entertainment facilities. The wealthier and elite parts of Joburg can be found in Johannesburg North and include such areas as Sandton, Houghton and Melrose.

Officially, Johannesburg is a Metropolitan area which includes Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, Soweto, Roodepoort, Newtown, Braamfontein, and other suburbs, in the CBD of Johannesburg.
