Nelspruit

Mpumalanga, situated at the northeast corner of South Africa on the border of Mozambique, is justifiably renowned for its extraordinary profusion of beauty and natural wonders, and remains among the top tourist destinations in the country with coveted destinations such as Kruger National Park, the Blyde River Valley and God’s Window attracting thousands of international visitors every year. As the capital of the Mpumalanga region, Nelspruit (currently undergoing a renaming to Mbombela) is ideally positioned in the fertile Crocodile Valley to serve as a gateway to the abundance of riches that this region has to offer. And while visitors will be swept away by the treasures of natural scenery, the city of Nelspruit is also a crucial industrial production centre for the area, attracting families and professionals to reside on a permanent basis.

Visitors to the Mpumalanga region are so amply served with natural beauty that the area has been subdivided into seven zones with their own unique must see attractions. The most prominent of these is naturally the Kruger National Park, which houses the ‘big five’ of African wildlife – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino – and is a hugely popular international destination for game watchers, as well as a leading centre for conservationist research in the continent. In addition Mpumalanga offers a myriad of waterfalls, hiking trails, nature reserves, indigenous forests and sites of historic and prehistoric noteworthiness. The Mpumalanga Escarpment and Lowveld contains several private game reserves, and also offers hiking, fishing, ethnic villages, eco-safaris and much more. The Panorama Route features the Blyde (Motlatse) River Canyon, as well as a number of other outstanding sights.

The city of Nelspruit itself is a fascinating blend of historic and modern; progressively industrial and yet committed to preserving its African tribal legacy and outstanding natural resources. The town of Pilgrim’s Rest has been declared a national monument, as the site of the original gold rush. Shangana Cultural Village provides visitors with the experience of traditional Shangaan life. The Sudwala Caves are the oldest known in the world. The Nelspruit Nature Reserve, Green Heritage Hiking Trail and Nelspruit Historical Walking Trail all have beautiful scenery for the intrepid walker. The Lowveld Botanical Gardens contains the first man-made rain forest and a variety of rare and beautiful plant species.

As a manufacturing centre for northeast South Africa, Nelspruit is a major producer of citrus, mango and tropical plantations, with its subtropical climate and rich soil providing the ideal growing conditions for a variety of produce. The Mbombela Stadium, built in anticipation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup at a cost of R1.05 bil, is a stunning venue for soccer and other sporting events. The city also contains two airports, Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and Nelspruit Airport, with both domestic and international routes being amply provided for.

Housing prices in Nelspruit compare exceptionally well with the rest of the country, with good sized three and four bedroom houses still going for under R700,000. And with Mpumalanga being one of the fastest growing regions in South Africa, the window of opportunity for homebuyers could not be more ideal.
