Fairly undulating farm consisting mainly of a dune type of veldt covered with grass. These dunes run parallel to each other which form several streets (area between dunes) in between. There is a pan that forms part (67 ha) of the farm which is completely level, but not suitable farming purposes.
Soil type:
Sandy type of soil with low organic material (typical red Kalahari sand)
Vegetation or grazing:
The property consists entirely of natural grazing and predominantly a grass type of veld. This includes mainly tall bushman
grass, small bushman grass, dune bushman grass, silky bushman grass, Gha grass, etc. A Little amount of Bushes such as three thorn (drie doring) and black thorn are also present over some areas of the farm. Vaalkameel (grey camel thorn) is spread over a large area of the farm. This farm is divided into 23 x camps, each camp with more than sufficient water for the number of animals it can carry.
Climate and rainfall and adverse conditions (frost, hail etc):
In summer, the temperature in the Kalahari basin climbs up to 40 degrees Celsius and higher. The annual rainfall is rarely more than 200 mm, and some years it even stays below 100 mm. Precipitation can only be expected between December and April, when tropical thunderstorm activity extends down to the Kalahari basin. Then it rains huge amounts in a short time, and the desert transforms into a green oasis with colorful wild flowers all over.
In winter (June to August) the climate is pleasant. Then the air is dry, and temperatures lie around 25 degrees Celsius, but the nights are harshly cold.
Surrounding farming activity and/or developments:
The surrounding area comprise mainly of other stock farming (mainly sheep) units.
Water supply:
Water is obtained from the “Kalahari West pipe-line” and 1 x borehole, gathered into 21 x water tanks (18 x 5000L + 3 x 10 000L). The water is then distributed to the different point/camps where it is required. The water quality is sufficient for domestic and farming purposes.
Electricity:
No electricity available
Fencing:
The perimeter of the farm is secured with “Jackal proof” and 1,8 metres in height. Inner boundaries are standard height – 1,2 metres with 7 strings. Generally in a good condition.
This area is renowned of it’s “pest free” environment which makes it so ideal and popular for the farming of small stock in particular. Another aspect is that, although the carrying capacity is fairly low, the vegetation, which consists mainly of small bushveld, has a very high protein content, which ensures maximum weight gain in especially small stock.
